Train

(Benita Kenn)
Train
c 2005 Benita Kenn

I’m riding on a train, heading north across new england
the leaves are just about to start to change
I’m lookin’ out the window at the scenes once so familiar
Feelin kind of empty-like
and feeling kind of strange

I thought it was a good idea to head to california
Back in ninety, I just knew I had to go
Now I’m living an existence that is never quite familiar
Someone who I used to be
And someone I don’t know

And, Jesus, I’m too old to be looking for myself again
These Amtrak rails are all I got to take me from this pain
Won’t you shine some lovin’ light upon me
Give my life some clarity
Oh Lord I’m nearly middle-aged
Still ridin’ on this train.

The whistle blows again as we pull out of new london
the gulls start flying wildly at the sound
And the towns all look so perfect, like some Norman Rockwell painting
Beckoning for me to stop here, wondering where I’m bound

Well, I can’t help but question if I’m ever gonna get there
To that city or that peaceful state of mind
Will I ever find that person
That someone so familiar
I’ve carried in this achin’ heart
For such a long, long time.

And, Jesus, I’m too old to be looking for myself again
These Amtrak rails are all I got to take me from this pain
Won’t you shine some lovin’ light upon me
Give my life some clarity
Oh Lord I’m getting awfully tired
ridin’ on this train.

I’m riding on a train, and we’re pulling into Boston
I feel like I’m a friend I used to know
That person who I used to be, someone so familiar
Now I’m ready to get off this train
So let the whistle blow
